Canker Sores 101

Published by Webmaster

2 minutes read

When you think about oral health, the first thing that comes to mind is your teeth, followed by lips and gums. Unfortunately, not all oral health issues can be prevented with consistent brushing and flossing. An example of something that can’t be avoided through brushing and flossing are canker sores. If you are suffering, know that you are not alone. Our dentist in Lakeview can help provide advice on how to treat your canker sore.

What Are They?

Canker sores develop inside the mouth, usually inside your cheeks or lip, at the base of your gums or on/under your tongue. They appear as small white or gray sores with a red border with a tingling or burning sensation.

Causes

While there is no one cause for canker sores, there are many factors that can lead to a sore developing. Genetics play a role, as well as trauma to the inside of your mouth, fatigue, stress and/or nutritional deficiencies, can cause them. Additionally many believe that consuming highly acidic foods can lead to canker sores.

Treatment

Canker sores usually will heal on their own after one to two weeks but there are certain steps you can take to speed up the process. Rinsing your mouth with a warm saltwater solution and avoiding acidic and spicy foods are all at home remedies. There are also many over the counter gels, creams, and pastes that help soothe these sores.

If your canker sores last more than two weeks, schedule an appointment to see us, your dentist in Lakeview, immediately.
