What Does Dental Insurance Cover?

Published by Webmaster

2 minutes read

A lot of people come to us asking what their dental insurance will cover. The short answer is that it really depends on your insurance provider and your policy. Dental insurance policies can be as comprehensive as including orthodontic work, and as minimal as just covering the basics. However, we’ve gathered what we tend to see in MOST dental insurance plans below.

General Preventative Care

Again—MOST policies cover this. And a lot of the policies cover this type of care in full. General preventative care includes things like exams, cleanings, and x-rays. Think of this as your basic dental checkup. These types of care are meant to Generally speaking, these are the highest paid services on the policy.

Restorative Care

Dental restorations are usually at least partially covered by dental insurance. A lot of the time, you will be responsible for some sort of out-of-pocket cost, however it usually isn’t a large percentage of the bill. Restorative care could mean fillings, root canals, or periodontal (gum) treatments.

Advanced Care

When we say advanced care, we typically mean procedures that are both more complex and more expensive than other treatment options. Treatments that fall into this category might be things like crowns, dentures, and implants. There’s no guarantee that these are all covered, but a lot of plans seem to include these things as at least partially covered. This is where the line starts to blur. Whether or not these are covered is going to vary greatly depending on your provider and policy.

What is NOT Covered?

Usually cosmetic procedures are not covered by most insurance policies. Elective procedures that are aesthetic and do not necessarily serve a functional purpose are generally not going to be found on your plan.
