How Do Teeth Become Discolored?

Published by Webmaster

2 minutes read

Our teeth are very important to our health and wellbeing. They put up with a lot of abuse, from crunchy food to sugary drinks, and work tirelessly to keep us healthy. With all of this responsibility teeth can easily become stained, dirty, and discolored over time.

Consuming certain foods and beverages, like coffee and wine, can stain your teeth, as can chewing tobacco, smoking, and even certain mouthwashes. Illnesses, and certain treatments for diseases like chemotherapy or various antibiotics, can also cause discoloration. Some materials used in dentistry, like amalgam for fillings, may turn teeth grayish or black in color with time. Other factors that cause tooth discoloration include age, genetics, trauma, poor dental hygiene, or elements in your local drinking water.

How To Keep Your Teeth White

The best ways to keep your teeth white and bright are fairly simple. Follow a dental care routine which includes flossing and brushing twice daily. You should also get regular teeth cleanings, and use an ADA approved mouthwash and whitening toothpaste. Try to remember to brush your teeth (or at least rinse out your mouth) after eating or drinking certain foods and beverages that might stain your teeth. If you can, use a straw when consuming things like coffee, wine, soda, etc. Finally, see your dentist regularly to make sure that any potential problems are caught and treated early to prevent tooth decay.
